Cast Elastomers: Precision-Engineered Polymers for Wear-Intensive Applications

Cast elastomers are a category of high-performance polyurethane or sometimes polyurea materials produced by pouring or injecting a liquid reactive system into a mold, where it chemically cures at ambient or low heat to form a solid, elastic product. The process begins with the precise metering and mixing of two liquid components: a polyol (or polyamine for polyurea) and an isocyanate. This mixture is a low-viscosity liquid that easily flows into complex molds, capturing fine detail, and then undergoes a chemical reaction to form the solid polymer network. Unlike thermoplastic elastomers that are melted and shaped, cast elastomers are thermosets, meaning their cross-linked structure is permanent and does not melt upon reheating. This manufacturing method allows for the production of large, intricate, and seamless parts that would be difficult or impossible to make through extrusion or molding of pre-formed rubber.
